Led by its team of over 120 volunteers, the Cavalier Centre is a fully accessible state of the art equestrian facility located just outside Much Wenlock. The centre offers inclusive horse-based activities such as riding, carriage driving, vaulting (gymnastics on horseback), hippotherapy (physio on horseback) and horse care. It also has a range of other programmes and activities that help people develop life skills, emotional intelligence and wellbeing. 2023 saw its inaugural participation in the Wenlock Olympian Society Summer Games through two events:

  • A special RDE equestrian event
  • Team dressage competition – run by the East Shropshire Riding Club

RDE equestrian event

The first half of the day featured dressage tests for riders, in all age groups. There were walk and trot classes for independent riders, as well as those with leaders. Demonstrating excellent standards of horsemanship, all the participants were eager to compete and show off their skills.

The afternoon’s event featured the popular “Countryside Challenge” where riders have to navigate an obstacle course featuring cones, simulated roads and bridges, post boxes, gates and more. Again, it was a competitive event and participants enjoyed the challenge of the course.

The medal and rosette ceremony at the end of the day was very popular and everyone at the Cavalier Centre – horses, participants, volunteers and coaches – were excited to take part in the Wenlock Olympian Society Games.

Team Dressage Competition

The East Shropshire Riding Club organize monthly dressage competitions at The Cavalier Centre for its members, and were honoured to join in the Wenlock Olympian Society’s 2023 Games by turning its normal competition into a team event of three riders, and the opportunity of winning an Olympian medal!.

Dressing up was encouraged, with the ‘Galloping Grecian Goddesses’ the deserving and apt winners, with Nicola Nicholls rising to the occasion to create ‘Olympic’ costumes for both her fellow team members and their horses.

All the fabulous helpers and riders who took part thoroughly enjoyed the morning dancing on their horses and to have a formal presentation of medals by Jordan Spilsbury, the Chairman of the Wenlock Olympian Society, was a wonderful experience.
