Athletics
The day saw some great competition with best Games performances being equalled. Athletes from as far away as Northumberland competed in a wide range of athletics events on a cool and breezy day.
2023 was a special anniversary for the Games, as it marks 100 years since Olympian Harold Langley, a Sparkhill Harrier, won the Pentathlon competition. He went on to represent Great Britain in the 1924 Paris Games in the triple jump. To commemorate this the Wenlock Olympian Games reintroduced this unique medal for winners of the pentathlon, which organisers hope will raise the profile of modern multi-event athletics and promote greater participation in this aspect of the sport. The introduction of the medal seemed to encourage a greater entry for the event, with more entries than recent years. We were pleased that Sparkhill Harriers were represented to award the first medal.
