The Audco Archers, based in Newport in Shropshire, were very honoured yesterday to host the Archery tournament of the 137th Wenlock Olympiad. 53 Archers competed from 15 different clubs from all across the country. They shot a “Western Round” which is 48 arrows at 60yds, followed by 48 arrows at 50yds. Although the weather stayed dry and bright all day, all archers had their skills tested, as our old enemy “the wind” definitely played its part, being very changeable and gusting significantly at times. However, this did not deter the Archers in any way, and all comments at the end of the day were very positive indeed.

Archery is a truly inclusive sport and yesterday proved this with male and female archers, disabled archers, junior and senior archers, all competing on the same field at the same distances at the same time.

Trophies and medals were awarded for the following categories:

Recurve Men
Compound Men
Recurve Women
Compound Women
Longbow Women
Junior Gents Recurve
Junior Women Recurve
Recurve Men 50+
Compound Men 50+
Longbow Men 50+
Barebow Men 50+
Recurve Women 50+
Compound Women 50+
Barebow women 50+

The Wenlock Olympiad Vice President, Mrs Helen Cromarty, was our Lady Paramount for the day, and presented 5 trophies and 32 medals (15 gold, 9 silvers and 8 bronze).

Thanks must go to Mr Paul Nelms (line captain and judge) along with Mr Gary Jones (Judge) and everyone from the Audco Archers who assisted in preparing the field and running this amazing event. And a last thank you must go to Karen and Graham Wooten (Land owners) who dedicate the use their magnificent facilities to Audco Archers.
