The “Flame of Hope” was lit, on the 15th April 2005, on Church Green at a ceremony hosted by the Olympian Society. The torch then left on the first stage of its journey to the National Special Olympic Games in July. On leaving Much Wenlock the torch was relayed around Britain by teams of policemen (starting with the London Marathon) and arrived in Glasgow on 2nd July in time for the start of the Games.
Our Chairman, Mr Phil Jones travelled to Scotland with Mr Brian Thomas, for the opening ceremony at Parkhead Stadium, Glasgow. They also watched some of the Games events over the weekend. About 1500 competitors from around Britain and several EU countries took part.
Phil said “The spirit, dignity and commitment of these special people (with learning difficulties) was truly inspiring and perfectly reflected the original Olympian ideals espoused by Dr William Penny Brookes”
