Wenlock Olympian Newsletter

JUNE 2010

The Society is based in Much Wenlock.  It’s aim is to encourage and promote Sport and the Live Arts.  An Olympian Weekend with a number of sports is held in July each year. Fourteen sports were included in the Games programme in 2009. Complete results of the 2009 event are shown on the WOS web site.

The annual Live Arts Festival for students of school age is held in March and has competitions in music and creative writing.

Membership of the Society is open to everyone and WOS welcomes new members.  The Annual General meeting and Committee meetings are open to visitors.

2012 Olympic Mascot

On Wednesday 19th May WOS was invited to join the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) to host the unveiling the 2012 Olympic mascots, ‘Wenlock’ and ‘Mandeville’.  The names honour Much Wenlock’s famous son and WOS founder, William Penny Brookes,as the inspiration for the International Olympics, and Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who inspired the formation of the Paralympic Games in Stoke Mandeville.   The evening was presented by Jonathan Edwards with  Bill Morris, LOCOG’s Director of Culture, Ceremonies and Education.

Wenlock and Mandeville will be visiting the Wenlock Olympian Games in person on Sunday, 11th July in the afternoon.

2012 Olympic Community Games Tool Kit

On 27th May, Jonathan Edwards and David Moorcroft were in Much Wenlock to launch the Community Games Toolkit.    This event was a media launch, focused primarily on attracting members of the press and attended by about 40 people from West Midlands 2012 and the Community Games office, and also representatives from Much Wenlock stakeholders.

The Toolkit has been designed to support communities/groups in organising their own Community Games covering everything from how to get started to activities to include to how to promote the event.

Funded by Legacy Trust UK, Community Games is part of the West Midlands Culture Programme for London 2012, which draws on the inspiration of William Penny Brookes’ original concept for the Wenlock Olympian Games.  It is hoped they will encourage and enable a region-wide street-level celebration of sporting and cultural abilities, run by communities for communities .

For anyone inspired to organise an event the Toolkit is available to download from www.wmfor2012.com/community-games.
