Wenlock Olympian Newsletter

JUNE 2008

The Society aims to encourage and promote Sport and the Live Arts in Much Wenlock. An Olympian Weekend with a number of sports is held in July each year. Fourteen sports were included in the Games programme in 2007. Complete results of the 2007 event are shown on the web-site. A Live Arts Festival for local school children is held in March. Membership of the Society is available to everyone and new members will be welcomed. The Annual General meeting and Committee meetings are open to visitors.

London 2012

As part of the National event on the 24th August all Local Authorities throughout the UK will be "flying the flag" at the time of the handover from Beijing to London. This is a special flag with the famous London 2012 logo.

Our application for this London 2012 flag has now been approved. We are the only organisation in this region, other than the Local Authorities, to have one thereby providing a very special opportunity for Much Wenlock to join this International event by “Flying the flag” at a prominent site in the town.

The Queens Award for Voluntary Service

On the anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation 2nd June it was announced in The London Gazette that the Society has been awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

This is a great honour for the Society and also gives the opportunity for representatives to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. The Award is to be presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire at an event at his home later in July to members of the Society

In September an Exhibition “A Century of Olympic Posters” by the  V&A opens at Ironbridge Gorge Museum on the 27th September. The Private View will be on the 26th which coincides with an “extravaganza” of dance, “Son et Lumiere” etc at the Coalbrookdale site. See local advertising for details.

THE LIVE ARTS FESTIVAL 2008

A full report of this year’s Festival and the results appear on the Society’s website soon.

We could not run this event without help from many local people who sponsor us, help by stewarding, advertising, cooking, helping with transport, being the audience, supporting the competitors and most of all the teachers who encourage and support and bring their pupils. We thank you all so much.

Plea for help – we need a Treasurer from this autumn, not a very arduous job but very important. There must be someone in Wenlock who would do this for the Live Arts Festival. Some of our committee are resigning this year and we need replacements. Please contact me if you would be able to help the few who are left!”
